States and Their Dates of Admission to the Union
The thirteen original colonies in North America could officially be admitted to the United States after the U.S. Constitution was written and signed by the delegates to the Constitutional Convention, on Sep. 17, 1787. Article IV, Section 3 of that document reads: New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new States shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress. The main part of this article grants the U.S. Congress the right to admit new states. The process usually involves Congress passing an enabling act that authorizes a territory to convene a constitutional convention, draft a constitution, and formally apply for admission. Then, assuming they meet any conditions set forward in the enabling act, Congress accepts or denies their new status.Ã Between Dec. 7, 1787, and May 29, 1790, each of the colonies became states. Since that time, 37 additional states have been added. Not all states were territories before they became states, however. Three of the new states were independent sovereign states at the time they were admitted (Vermont, Texas, and California), and three were carved out of existing states (Kentucky, part of Virginia; Maine part of Massachusetts; West Virginia out of Virginia). Hawaii was a sovereign state between 1894 and 1898 before it became a territory.Ã Five states were added during the 20th century. The last states to be added to the US were Alaska and Hawaii in 1959. The following table lists each state with the date it entered the union, and its status before they were states. Rating Othello - 1404 Words
Rating Othello Is this Shakespearean tragedy Othello at the top of the rating chart, or is it just near the top? And why? This essay intends to examine various aspects of this subject, along with critical opinion. This play ranks near the top. The Bardââ¬â¢s presentation of emotions, character, of good and evil actions that are down-to-earth ââ¬â these are sometimes seen as the main reasons for the high ranking of Othello. Louis B. Wright and Virginia A. LaMar in ââ¬Å"The Engaging Qualities of Othelloâ⬠maintain that the popularity of this play has been consistent for about 400 years because it treats emotions that are universal and persistent in human nature. For shame, put on your gown! / Your heart is burst; you have lost half your soul.â⬠Indeed, the disappearance of Desdemona from home would seem as such to an elderly father. Human wisdom is obvious again and again; for example, when the senator escorts the general to the council, the duke addresses the ââ¬Å"valiant Othelloâ⬠without even noticing the senator at first: ââ¬Å"I did not see you. Welcome, gentle signior.â⬠As Othello begins his address before council, he employs much wisdom in the first two verses: ââ¬Å"Most potent, grave, and reverend signiors, / My very noble, and approved good masters,â⬠by being as complimentary as possible, it would seem. Shakespeareââ¬â¢s human wisdom no doubt comes partially from his understanding of the workings of manââ¬â¢s mind. He possesses the ability to analyze in a psychological manner. Harry Levinââ¬â¢s General Introduction to The Riverside Shakespeare includes these comments regarding the psychological aspect of Shakespeareââ¬â¢s characters: During the later eighteenth and most of the nineteenth century, Shakespeareââ¬â¢s interpreters practiced what Bernard Shaw liked to call ââ¬Å"Bardolatry.â⬠They all but deified the Bard of Avon because he was the creator of so many characters who could be treated as if they were human beings ââ¬â could be identified with, psychologized over [myShow MoreRelatedWhat Makes A Good First Impression?1508 Words à |à 7 Pagesclear their good names. Second, person and only person can create favorable conditions in his or her life. 1. Experience of successful people D. However, some people argue that no one can manage the future. 1. The destiny 2. Life circumstances III. Conclusion. Meaning of the ââ¬Å"Every man is an architect of his futureâ⬠make the public understand the phrase in different ways. Some people become rich and successful by a chance, while others reach their goals after a long struggle. According to Dahl Ransom (1999), wealthy people may help to poor people, but they will not make poor people become as rich as they are. Why they will not make them rich? Someone may say that wealthy man cannot make poor man rich because being poor and being wealthy is the fate. Others may say that living in wealth depends on person: if poor person do not want to be rich, he will not be rich; but he can be wealthy if he really want it. Some people believe in natureââ¬â¢s laws that everything in this world is related and nothing can happen just like you want; while others know that everything in their hands, that they are masters of their life, they are making their destiny by themselves. Although some people believe that it is quite hard to manage the future because of inevitable fate, there seem to be no doubt that the person and only person is a creator of the future. One of the main reasons for saying that everyone is an architect of his future is the personââ¬â¢s attitude to life. Our future is what we are thinking and doing now. We creating next day by thoughts, wishes, behavior, etc. That is true! There is not only one possible course of events in your life. Every person has several variants of a destiny, and everyone choose the way which he or she wants to follow. The problem is how people feel about a situation that forces them to make this choice. Almost everyone meet with some obstacles on their life road, and many people see them as something irresistible, irreparable. Others see these obstacles as a challenge. They see them as not a dead end, but the opportunity. In all the events that happen around us, for someone there are opportunities and for others may be ââ¬Å"dead endâ⬠. For example, Steil (2007) in his article mentioned about a girl, who almost lost the ability to see and move because of accident, weird accident. Doctors said that the situation is very bad, and many people may give up in her place. However, this girl believed herself and in her strength, she was positively-oriented to everything. It was reflected in her attitude to herself and other people. No matter how the situation was bad, she could struggle with this obstacle and move straight to her goals. Another reason is that the person and only person can create favorable conditions in his or her life. The one of good examples for that are the successful people. Not getting that promotion can make person feel like the end of the world, but people who are the idols for whole world show that devastating failures are just another stop on the road to success. For example, Marilyn Monroeââ¬â¢s first contract with Columbia Pictures expired because they told her she wasnââ¬â¢t pretty or talented enough to be an actress. Monroeà kept plugging away and now she is one of the most iconic actresses and sex symbols of all time (http://marilynmonroe. com/history/). Oprah Winfrey was fired from her television reporting job because they told her she wasnââ¬â¢t fit to be on screen. Butà Winfrey reboundedà and became the undisputed queen of television talk shows. Sheââ¬â¢s also a billionaire (http://www. oprah. com/index. html). These are the one of the worldââ¬â¢s greatest success stories of people, who just happen to have experience of massive failure that could have easily made them give-up. But they didnââ¬â¢t and now theyââ¬â¢re the monuments of success that they are remembered for, a good source of encouragement when it feels like you will never make it to the top. However, some people argue that no one can manage the future because of the destiny and life circumstances. As Conchalovsky says (2005), ââ¬Å"For every person, there is a destiny. Nothing happens accidentally, everything happens because of some law or other things. â⬠There is a natureââ¬â¢s law that everything comes from something, all subjects and objects are related to each other. Another example is inevitable life situations occurring frequently nowadays that can ruin plans of human at anytime. But, as it was written, the attitude to life helps to fight with these situations. To conclude, our life is complex and unpredictable. Often people think that no one can hide from the fate, that we were born and live on a particular scenario, and that everything what destined above will happen. But few of us have thought about the fact that person creates the future, personââ¬â¢s actions, thoughts, desires and feelings. Always remember that people are the creators of the future, so they must create it with enthusiasm, reveal the creative potential. Reference list: Ransom, M. R. , ; Dahl, G. B. (1999). Social Inclusion and Cultural Diversity â⬠Free Samples to Students
Question: Discuss about the Social Inclusion and Cultural Diversity. Answer: Introduction Red Telecom is one of the leading telecommunication carrier and service providers in Australia. They are engaged in both residential and business sector providing high speed broadband, internet, web hosting, data, fibre optic internet and home phone products. The company was in a line of expansion and was moving globally as a part of restructuring its technical and customer call operations. Thus the customer service division was facing new challenges(Aali, 2017). They were not trained to treat with new customer call operation. Before expansion, they used to outsource call to handle enquiries related to surplus and after hour service. But now things were changed and they could not handle the customer service. So a Learning Program to enhance their customer service is going to be introduced to increase efficiency and to ensure customers satisfaction(Ascca, 2017). As Red has expanded its business globally, the requirement of customer service needs to find out about various locations. They need to know the cultural diversity of those places. Otherwise they cannot communicate and comprehend customers problem. So this Adult Learning program must be included cultural diversity with all relevant geographical knowledge of those places of business of the organization(Ajal, 2010). Previously their existence was within Australia. So they do not have general idea about global problem and global calling system for customer service. The technical set is also different for global customer care. So this Adult learning Program should be included with cultural and technical training as well. The technical team has to relocate overseas after attending the program. They have to coordinate the onsite technicians with sub-contractor providing support system in relation to faulty phone connections and ADSL(McNeil et al., 2006). So these technical teams need to be relocated overseas after the training schedule and they have to know about the localities they are moving. The organization should have ideas about cultural history, ethnicity and cross cultural society. Every person needs a time to accommodate in new atmosphere. As customer service is relocated in overseas location, Australian customers are facing typical problem related to language. They are becoming frustrated and hopeless which may be root cause of ruining reputation of the company. This will hamper the image of Red. People of overseas customer service providers do not have knowledge of Australia. So they cannot communicate with local accent. They do not have knowledge about previous process of billing, account and pricing policies. New customer service is very strict in terms of payment which is resulting frequent customer disconnection. Old customers of Australia become very furious and felt agitated about the latest service level of the company. So these overseas customer ser vice people have to be aware of everything related to Australian customers through the Learning Program(Asn, 2016). As suddenly all the setup of Red changed, they were received a series of phone calls from customers which had never happened before. The staffs felt stressed and pressurised. People were losing their jobs as well and they cannot accept to lose their long time colleagues. They could not accept the structural change of their old company(Townsend, 2008). This frustration makes people less productive with gradual decrease of interest about their job. So in order to cope up with the new set up caused due to changed scenario of the organization of adjusting with new colleagues and bid adieu to the old colleagues, staffs need to be managing the changed working situation. The entire job is done by team and team needs to be coordinated well. Team members should be considerate with all these happening within the company(Vic, 2008). A program must be introduced which is consisting of basic elements to teach the staffs in order to reconnect to ensure the desired service level to the customers as well to grow as a team. Without a team, work cannot be done smoothly. The program must contain the present condition what Red is going through. If all staffs have the idea of overseas expansion of their company, they can take it mentally to support the company. Because staffs know that if their company is expanding its global business, the staffs will also gain from this activity. This expansion of company actually makes growth of staffs indirectly. So for their own sake, they have to adjust and should modify their working culture as per the need of the company(Abs, 2008). This learning program basically gives support to the enhanced level of demand as the company is expanding in global scenario. So program should be with innovative ideas relevant to these situations to upgrade the service of Red. Program should concentrate in the area of customer service irrespective of its global or domestic sector(Lucardie, 2014). The program should include more comprehensive performance management system and should instruct to all the team leaders to record all the call to be used in future for survey and to respond new problems. This call recording system would be used in survey for evaluating performance feedback of customer service call centre staffs. This process would help to assess the process if it is wrong or right with right steps to be taken by service provider customer care. This would help in professional management of entire process. The program should include findings after analysing and reviewing all the problems associated with this issue. The objective of this program is to train HR as per requirement of the job to be complied by staffs for the customers. It aims to lessen the gap between skill desired and exercised. Team leaders should ensure the following: To submit feedback from performance review To discuss with upper level of managers and employees To support themselves through survey To analyse of the critical situation with all relevant persons To be informed about customer complaints and nature of those complaints To build the system that can enable to provide feedback from all team members and overseas staffs(Hayes et al., 2016). Conclusion This program would help the Team Leaders to help them playing the pivotal role in the Customer Resolution Service, which is part of Human Resource Development of the company. They have to find out the problems with subsequent attempts to resolve those with instant innovative ideas. And for this purpose, the employees are to be trained with this Adult Learning Program. By the help of this program, the employees would be able to deal with strategic movements which could change the internal process and system to facilitate the present situation of work. The team leaders must know the actual review getting from customers and how these are all resolved effectively and efficiently. They have to be conscious about overseas problems, miscommunication, and service issues of colleagues. The team leaders should facilitate with local cultural support with language, local trend, and local demand. A little hazard makes critical for the employees which may have great impact on ones psychology with subsequent effect on productivity. The Team Leaders would be seen as the central part of the companys key policy making after attending Adult Learning Program because they can now participate directly with resources and data related to feedback from customers. So whenever Red has to change a policy, Team Leaders would get more importance in that process. This way Red also could expand without policy lag. It would have presence in global business map with frontline employees willing to resolve problems of the customers. In this way, trust of customers grows with subsequent prosperity in future for the organization. References: Aali, 2017. Australian Adult Learning Institute. Workplace Stress Leading to Burnout an Example by
Workplace Stress Leading to Burnout Stress in the workplace has been a concern on the minds of human resource employees in many large corporations. By neglecting causes of workplace stress, employers may be nullifying their investment in employee-focused health-promotion programs. The evidence linking certain workplace characteristics to employee stress and health is as strong as the evidence linking smoking to lung cancer (Santa-Barbara pg 2). "These are equal-opportunity challenges." In a dynamic society where change is the only constant, people find it particularly challenging to manage work overload -- and as families split up, reconfigure or move around the country, individuals are less and less likely to have an adequate support system to help them combat stress (Overwhelmed and Overworked, n.d.). Burnout can be defined as a general lack of caring or concern with noticeable less motivation. Many who cannot discover the source of the stress causing burnout can go into depression further complicating their lives. However, according to Ceridian Connection, stress can be overcome, but not without recognizing its source (Overwhelmed and Overworked, n.d.). Once the source is recognized help can come from many directions including managers who can take measures to keep employees involved and engaged. Stress in the workplace is definitely causing employee burnout, but with the right help, and by noticing the symptoms early enough it can be thwarted. Guilt and Innocence in The Last Night of the World
Guilt and Innocence in 'The Last Night of the World' In Ray Bradburys The Last Night of the World, a husband and wife realize that they and all the adults they know have been having identical dreams: that tonight will be the last night of the world. They find themselves surprisingly calm as they discuss why the world is ending, how they feel about it, and what they should do with their remaining time. The story was originally published in Esquire magazine in 1951 and is available for free on Esquires website. Acceptance The story takes place in the early years of the Cold War and in the first months of the Korean War, in a climate of fear over ominous new threats like the hydrogen or atom bomb and germ warfare. So our characters are surprised to find that their end wont be as dramatic or violent as they have always expected. Rather, it will be more like the closing of a book, and things [will] stop here on Earth. Once the characters stop thinking about how the Earth will end, a sense of calm acceptance overtakes them. Though the husband concedes that the end sometimes frightens him, he also notes that sometimes he is more peaceful than frightened. His wife, too, notes that [y]ou dont get too excited when things are logical. Other people seem to be reacting the same way. For instance, the husband reports that when he informed his co-worker, Stan, that they had had the same dream, Stan didnt seem surprised. He relaxed, in fact. The calmness seems to come, in part, from a conviction that the outcome is inevitable. There is no use struggling against something that cant be changed. But it also comes from an awareness that no one will be exempted. Theyve all had the dream, they all know its true, and theyre all in this together. Like Always The story touches briefly on some of humanitys bellicose propensities, like the bombs and germ warfare mentioned above and the bombers on their course both ways across the ocean tonight thatll never see land again. The characters consider these weapons in an effort to answer the question, Do we deserve this? The husband reasons, We havent been too bad, have we? But the wife responds: No, nor enormously good. I suppose thats the trouble. We havent been very much of anything except us, while a big part of the world was busy being lots of quite awful things. Her comments seem particularly trenchant given that the story was written less than six years after the end of World War II. At a time when people were still reeling from the war and wondering if there was more they could have done, her words could be construed, in part, as a comment on concentration camps and other atrocities of the war. But the story makes clear that the end of the world isnt about guilt or innocence, deserving or not deserving. As the husband explains, things just didnt work out. Even when the wife says, Nothing else but this could have happened from the way weve lived, theres no feeling of regret or guilt. Theres no sense that people could have behaved any way other than the way they have. And in fact, the wifes turning off the faucet at the end of the story shows exactly how hard it is to change behavior. If youre someone looking for absolution which it seems reasonable to imagine our characters are the idea that things just didnt work out might be comforting. But if youre someone who believes in free will and personal responsibility, you might be troubled by the message here. The husband and wife take comfort in the fact that they and everyone else will spend their last evening more or less like any other evening. In other words, like always. The wife even says thats something to be proud of, and the husband concludes that behaving like always shows [w]ere not all bad. The things the husband will miss are his family and everyday pleasures like a glass of cool water. That is, his immediate world is whats important to him, and in his immediate world, he hasnt been too bad. To behave like always is to continue to take pleasure in that immediate world, and like everyone else, thats how they choose to spend their final night. There is some beauty in that, but ironically, behaving like always is also exactly what has kept humanity from being enormously good.

Strategic Choice and Evaluation Paper - Essay Example The Fast food industry is a very competitive industry in which customer service becomes a focal point. The organization has many strong points that gives them an advantage over their competitors. For example, Chick-Fil-A is known for serving nutritional meals compared to other fast food chains. In addition, it was one of the prime restaurants that came up with the idea to have a ââ¬Å"chicken sandwich.â⬠The founder of the company, Truett Cathy, is very religious and ethics oriented coming from a strong Baptist background [2]. Hence, the company believes in strong Christian and family roots as the restaurant is closed on Sundays. Moreover, the companyââ¬â¢s marketing department is fantastic in their advertisements as they often use humor to attract customers [2]. The strategy of the company is to serve nutritious food than its competitors, which becomes the focal point in its quest to compete against other rivals. Another strategy that enables them to be a great fast food ch ain is the fact that that the employees are efficient and attentive to the needs of the customers [1]. Chick-Fil-A employees take pride and pleasure in serving their customers instead of a typical ââ¬Å"Your Welcomeâ⬠statement. In addition, the employees pride in providing the best services that includes folding napkins in a particular way that pleases the customers [4]. Moreover, the company excels in attracting customers with regular promotions and offering coupons after a big meal. Not only does that keep the customers loyal, it also allows the customer to share these coupons with other acquaintances. Furthermore, Chick-Fil-A excel in reducing its operations time while serving its customers. It prime ability to strive to serve its customers within 90 seconds in a drive-through service is an amazing feat no doubt[1]. With the assistance of smart technology, a timer is often set by the computer screen that tells the employees the progress of the order [1]. This enables the e mployees to be efficient in their time management and at the same time be motivated in their services. Reducing the operation time is the key to being a successful customer oriented business in this booming commerce. Annually, the company evaluates and grades it service by investing more than $1 million in the department. The feedback from customers is received through phone surveys conducted by the company [2]. Each survey consists of twenty questions that evaluate the quality, attentiveness, and the service of its employees. Any other feedback is also welcome from the customers. Again, this is a major step taken by the company to allow itself to gain some leverage against its competitors [3]. Knowing and understanding the customers concerns and feedback is a huge step towards becoming a critical player in the fast food industry through improvement. The company does have many opportunities to expand into the market. Since Chick-Fil-A had healthy sales of around 3127 million last ye ar, the organization does have solid market position. In addition, it continues to use customer service as a reliable tool to attract customers. While the company does have many strong points, one has to acknowledge the fact that having only chicken related items in the menu is detrimental for the business. The customers of today more than ever want choices in everything. Young adults and children are picky eaters and sometimes crave just more than chicken nuggets and fries on a regular basis.
